Prime Visa

How to apply for the Prime Visa

Six steps, the eligibility gate that stops most people, and an honest answer to the credit-score question nobody can actually answer.

The short answer

How to apply for the Prime Visa

Sort your Prime membership first, then apply through Amazon or Chase — both routes reach the same Chase application. Expect a hard credit check and one of three answers: approved, declined, or needs further review. No issuer publishes a score cutoff, so nobody can honestly tell you your odds in advance.

Before you start

The eligibility gate that stops most people

The Prime Visa’s 5% back (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-11) tier requires an eligible Prime membership. That is not a formality attached to the application — it is the reason to hold the card at all. Applying without a membership gets you a Visa that earns 2% and 1% and nothing special at Amazon.

If you do not have Prime yet, the sequence that makes sense is membership first, card second. Prime costs $139 per year (About Amazon — Prime free trial, verified 2026-08-11), and eligible customers can start with a free trial. If you are certain you do not want a membership, stop here and read what the card is worth without Prime — the short answer is that a different Amazon card fits you better.

The steps

The application, start to finish

  1. 1.Check you have an eligible Prime membership

The 5% rate is conditional on an eligible Prime membership. You can apply without one, but you would be applying for a card whose main feature is switched off. Sort the membership first if you intend to use the card at Amazon.

  2. 2.Read the current offer terms before you start

Welcome offers change without notice and are for new cardmembers only. Read what is actually being advertised on the day you apply rather than what a review said last quarter.

  3. 3.Open the application from Amazon or from Chase

Both routes lead to the same Chase application. Starting from your signed-in Amazon account usually pre-fills your name and address, which is the only practical difference.

  4. 4.Fill in income, housing cost and employment

Report your figures accurately. Total annual income can include income you have reasonable access to, and your housing payment is asked for separately. Overstating either is a bad idea on a legal document.

  5. 5.Submit and read the decision carefully

Three outcomes are possible: approved, declined, or a message saying the application needs further review. The third is not a denial and is handled differently from the second.

  6. 6.If approved, check the welcome offer landed

Chase advertises the sign-up gift card as loading into your Amazon gift card balance on approval. Confirm it appears; if it does not, that is a question for Chase rather than for Amazon.

Approval

What we can and cannot tell you about approval odds

This is where most pages on this topic quietly invent a number. We are not going to, because there is not one to give.

What is knowable: the Prime Visa is a Chase-issued Visa, not a store-branded card. Chase’s general-purpose cards are not designed for thin files or rebuilding credit, and the same application will look at your income, your existing obligations and your history.

What is not knowable: the score at which the answer changes. Chase publishes no cutoff for this card. Any specific figure you see quoted — and you will see several, all different — is a publisher’s estimate or a summary of self-reported data from forums, not an issuer rule. We treat community-reported approval data as exactly that: a labeled anecdote, useful for calibration and useless as a promise.

What we cannot do at all: influence the decision, see your file, or tell you whether you personally will be approved. If a site tells you it can, that is a claim worth being suspicious of. Our research method page sets out where the line is between reporting published terms and inventing certainty.

One widely discussed factor is worth naming carefully. Chase is broadly reported to decline applicants who have opened a number of new card accounts in the previous two years. Chase does not publish that rule, so we present it as what it is: a well-documented community observation rather than a term you can look up. If you have opened several cards recently, factor it in.

After you apply

Reading the three possible answers

Approved. Chase advertises a $150 Amazon Gift Card loaded into your Amazon Gift Card balance on approval (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-11). Confirm it appears in your Amazon balance. The card’s ongoing value now depends entirely on you clearing the statement in full — at 18.74%–29.99% variable (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-11), interest overtakes 5% rewards very quickly.

Needs further review. Not a denial. It usually means the automated decision could not be made and a person needs to look. A written answer typically follows.

Declined. You are entitled to an adverse action notice setting out the reasons, and that notice is worth reading rather than filing. It is the most specific feedback you will ever get about your file. What to do about each of those reasons is its own page.

#ad New cardmembers only. Applying is a credit application with a hard inquiry, and approval is Chase's decision. We earn a flat fee if you sign up through this link, at no cost to you. How we’re paid.

Common questions

Common questions

What credit score do you need for the Prime Visa?
Chase does not publish a minimum score for this card, so any specific number you see quoted is someone's estimate rather than an issuer rule. It is a Chase-issued Visa rather than a store card, which means it is not aimed at thin or rebuilding credit.
Is applying for the Prime Visa a hard credit check?
A card application is a credit application, so expect a hard inquiry on your report. That is true whether the answer is yes or no, which is why it is worth checking your eligibility position before applying rather than after.
How long does a Prime Visa decision take?
Many applications return a decision on the spot. Some return a message saying the application needs further review, which typically means a person has to look at it and the answer arrives by post or by phone later.
Can you get the Prime Visa without a Prime membership?
You can hold the card without an active membership, but the 5% rate is conditional on one. If you do not want Prime, the Amazon Visa is the version of this card designed for you.
What happens if the application is declined?
You will receive an adverse action notice explaining the reasons, which is genuinely useful information. The Amazon Store Card is issued by a different bank with a different appetite, and is the usual fallback.
