The Prime perks nobody counts

Grubhub+ is the largest single perk on the list

Amazon states there is free Grubhub+ as part of the membership — a $120 annual value — including $0 delivery fees on eligible orders (About Amazon — Prime for Young Adults, verified 2026-08-12). Note that $120 is Amazon’s own framing of the value rather than our valuation, and it is close to the annual price of Prime itself.

The honest test is the one we apply to every bundled benefit: what would you otherwise spend? If you order delivery food a few times a month and currently pay delivery fees on each one, this is worth real money and it is worth more than most people assume. If you never order delivery, it is worth exactly nothing, and Amazon’s $120 figure should not enter your arithmetic at all.

Fuel savings are small per visit and add up quietly

Amazon states Prime members save $0.10 per gallon at more than 7,500 participating bp, Amoco and ampm locations (About Amazon — Prime for Young Adults, verified 2026-08-12). Ten cents a gallon on a fifteen-gallon tank is $1.50. Fill up weekly and that is roughly $78 a year, which is more than half the annual membership on its own.

The condition is real, though: it applies at participating locations of three specific brands. If none of them is convenient to you, the benefit is theoretical. This is the clearest example on the whole list of a perk whose value depends entirely on your geography rather than your habits.

Grocery delivery is the most location-dependent benefit Amazon offers

same-day perishable grocery delivery in over 1,000 cities and towns, with plans to double that reach by year's end (About Amazon — Prime for Young Adults, verified 2026-08-12). That is meaningful coverage and it is not universal. Combined with the fact that Same-Day Delivery is free for orders over $25 in most cities for Prime members (About Amazon — Prime for Young Adults, verified 2026-08-12), the grocery layer is the part of Prime most likely to be worth a lot to a city household and nothing to a rural one. Prime Day is the trap

Access to member-only sales is a genuine benefit and it is also the perk most likely to cost you money rather than save it. A discount on something you were already going to buy is a saving. A discount on something you would not otherwise have bought is spending, and a sale designed around a membership is designed to produce exactly that.

We are not going to put a number on Prime Day in anyone’s break-even, because the honest number for most people is negative. If you keep a list of things you need and buy them during the event, the benefit is real. If the event generates the list, it is not.

The rule that keeps a bundle honest is simple: only count what you would otherwise pay for. Not what a benefit is notionally worth, not what Amazon says it is worth, and not what it would be worth to somebody else.

Work through the list above and write a number next to each one — zero for anything you would not use. Add those up. That total is what the perks contribute, and it goes alongside the delivery number from the delivery page and the entertainment number from the entertainment page.

Most people who go through this properly find one or two perks doing real work and the rest doing none. That is fine. A membership does not need six good benefits; it needs enough of them, for you, to clear the price.
