Points & Prime

Black Friday

What to set up before the sale starts

Everything on this list takes a minute now and is unfixable at checkout on the day.

Hands holding a checklist on a clipboard

The short answer

What to do before the sale starts

Ten checks, all of them boring, none of them fixable at checkout. Membership status, default card, two separate balances, addresses, prices, delivery dates, billing cycle, a spending number and alerts. Twenty minutes now, and the season runs itself.

The list

Ten checks, in the order they matter

  1. 1.Confirm the Prime membership is active and not about to renew on a dead card

The 5% rate at Amazon is conditional on an eligible Prime membership. A renewal that fails in late November is a rate cut in your heaviest Amazon month.

  2. 2.Set the right card as the default in your Amazon wallet

Whatever is set as your one-click default is what your fastest purchases will use. Fix that before the fast purchases start.

  3. 3.Check your rewards points balance

Know the number before you need it. Points are worth one cent each and do not expire while the account is open, so you are checking, not redeeming.

  4. 4.Check your gift card balance separately

It is a different pot from rewards, and Amazon publishes the balance page at amazon.com/balance. Money sitting there is money already spent.

  5. 5.Update the shipping addresses you will actually use

Gifts going to other people is the one time of year the address book matters, and a wrong address is an expensive kind of fast checkout.

  6. 6.Decide your prices in advance and set alerts

Write down what you would pay for each item you intend to buy, then let a price alert tell you rather than a countdown timer.

  7. 7.Check your Subscribe & Save delivery date and its reminder email

Amazon commits to sending a reminder before each delivery showing items, price and discount. Read it so a subscription order does not land unnoticed in the middle of the season.

  8. 8.Note your statement closing date and due date

The grace period requires paying in full by the due date. Knowing where the sale falls in your billing cycle tells you how long you actually have.

  9. 9.Decide the total you will spend before you see any deals

A number set in October is a decision. A number set on the day is a reaction to marketing.

  10. 10.Turn on transaction alerts

Fraud attempts rise with transaction volume, and the fastest way to catch a bad charge is to see it happen rather than to find it on a statement in January.

Why one and two

The two checks that change what you earn

The membership. The Prime Visa pays 5% back (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-11) at Amazon with an eligible Prime membership. Without one, Chase publishes 3% back at Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market and the participating Amazon stores and sites without an eligible Prime membership (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-12). Those two points of rate apply to everything you spend at Amazon between now and January, which makes a lapsed renewal the single most expensive administrative failure available to you this quarter.

The default card. Nothing in your Amazon account announces which card is about to be charged when you buy quickly. If the card you intend to earn on is not the default, then your fastest purchases — which during a sale is most of them — earn at whatever the default pays instead.

Why three and four

Two balances, two very different rules

These look like the same thing on screen and behave completely differently. Your rewards balance is points held by Chase, where 100 points = $1 (each $1 in % back rewards earned is equal to 100 points) (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-11) and points don't expire as long as your card account remains open (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-11). Your gift card balance is money held by Amazon, where Amazon Gift Cards have no fees and no expiration date (Amazon — Gift Cards store, verified 2026-09-06) and to view your gift card balance go to amazon.com/balance; for Amazon Reload, go to amazon.com/reload, select one-time or auto-reload, enter amount, choose payment, and complete your order (Amazon — Gift Card Reload, verified 2026-09-06).

The practical difference at holiday time: rewards can still become cash, and gift card balance can only ever become an Amazon order. So check both, and spend the inflexible one first. The full comparison is on gift card balance vs rewards balance.

Why seven and eight

The two dates that decide the damage

The subscription date. If you run Subscribe & Save, there is an order already scheduled somewhere in the season. Amazon commits that in advance of each delivery, we will send you a reminder email showing the items, price and any applicable discount for your upcoming delivery (Amazon — Subscribe & Save, verified 2026-09-06), and that skip your deliveries or cancel your subscriptions at any time by visiting Manage Your Subscriptions (Amazon — Subscribe & Save, verified 2026-09-06). Both facts are only useful if you read the email when it arrives, which in a busy inbox in late November is exactly when you will not. Note the date now.

The billing dates. Where the sale falls in your statement cycle decides how long you have before the bill is due, and the grace period is conditional: your due date will be a minimum of 21 days after the close of each billing cycle, and Chase will not charge interest on new purchases if you pay your entire balance or Interest Saving Balance by the due date each month (Chase — Prime Visa Pricing & Terms, verified 2026-08-22). A purchase made just after a statement closes gets the longest interest-free run; one made just before it closes gets the shortest. That is not a trick, just a cycle worth knowing.

Why ten

Volume is cover for fraud

A season of unfamiliar merchants, package notifications and unusual spending is the ideal environment for a charge you did not make to go unnoticed. The card’s protection is real — Chase publishes Zero Liability Protection means you are not held responsible for unauthorized charges made with your card or account information (Chase — Prime Visa, verified 2026-08-12) — but it works best when you spot the charge early. Transaction alerts are the cheapest version of that.

Related, and worth knowing before the phone rings: Amazon states plainly that you should do not provide any gift card details (such as the claim code) to someone you do not know or trust, and never use Amazon.com Gift Cards for payment outside of Amazon or its affiliated stores (Amazon — Gift Cards store, verified 2026-09-06). Gift card scams peak in the same weeks. That is covered on gift card scams, and the dispute route for a genuine bad charge is on disputes and zero liability.

Common questions

Common questions

What should you do before Black Friday to maximize rewards?
Set the card you intend to earn on as the default in your Amazon wallet, confirm your Prime membership is active and will not lapse mid-season, check your points and gift card balances, and decide your prices in advance.
Where do you check your Amazon gift card balance?
Amazon publishes the balance page as amazon.com/balance. Gift card balance and card rewards balance are two different pots and are easy to confuse.
Should you redeem Amazon points before Black Friday?
There is no deadline pressure. Chase publishes that points do not expire while the card account remains open, and every redemption route pays the same one cent per point, so holding them costs nothing.
Does an expired card on file affect your Prime membership?
A membership that fails to renew is a membership that has lapsed, and the Prime Visa's 5% at Amazon is conditional on an eligible membership. Checking the payment method on file before the season is a one-minute job.
Should you pause Subscribe & Save deliveries during the sale?
Not necessarily, but you should read the reminder email. Amazon commits to sending one before each delivery showing the items, the price and any applicable discount, which is the only reliable way to know what is arriving and at what price.
